Take The Guesswork Out of Setting Fees

Setting fees correctly is pivotal to your business success. If you set your fees too low, you can wind up doing a lot of work without earning any profit. Set your fees too high and you can scare off potential clients. No wonder the question I get asked the most by designers is, what should I be charging?

Since there is no such thing as a standard, or even an average, fee scale for interior design services, often designers simply guess at what their fees should be. They may reach out to their professional network or rely on anecdotal information about what other designers in their area are charging, or they may just pick an amount that they think clients will be willing to pay. Usually they end up overestimating or underestimating what they should be charging.

Setting fees is not a guessing game. Your fees need to be based on sound business principles and practices. In order to help the many designers who wrestle with this crucial business decision, I have developed some guidelines and formulas you can use to set your fees properly and profitably.
